The Ghana Geotechnical Society (GGS) has been in existence over the last two dacades. It is the official mouth piece for geotechnical practitioners in Ghana and specialty group for the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GhIE). The Society is also a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). Member strength has grown over the years and practitioners cut across mining and related industry, civil, geological and geoenvironmental engineering consultancy for civil engineering infrastructure. The Society has the focus to maintain ethics and provide the necessary education of the practise to the public. Members have had the privilege to attend international seminars and conferences to broaden their knowledge in addition to making contributions at these events.

To non geotech practitioners............

Geotechnical Engineering is about providing vital information about subject sites that are proposed for civil engineering infrastructures. These include roads, bridges, buildings, dams, pipelines, tanks storage facilities, landfill facilities and anything that has to be engineered on the ground. The practice works in close collaboration with geologists, engineering geologists, structural engineers, environmental engineers, urban planners, architects, seismologists among others. The impact of geotechnical engineering will provide intelligent decision making in terms of foundation design and construction, economic evaluation of projects, safety of projects, cost analysis of foundation works, planning and mobilization to site, the choice of equipment to use for earthworks and evaluation of construction materials etc.
