Prof Ing. Dr. Samuel I.K. Ampadu

Prof Ampadu began his career as Teaching Assistant, with the civil engineering department, at the University of Science & Technology (now Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology ) after his National Service with the same institution in 1981. He progressed on the lecturing ladder to become Assistant Lecturer and then to Lecturer in 1985. He pursued with his academics at the prestigious Tokyo University for MSc and PhD in 1986 and 1988 respectively. He returned to lecturership in 1992 after post-doctorate intern with a Japanese Construction Company.

Prof Ampadu teaches soil mechanics, foundation engineering and geotechnical engineering as well as development engineering at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels at KNUST. Between 1993 and 1994 he undertook a course in labour-based methods of construction at IHE, Delft, The Netherlands. This underpinned his interest to develop a research project to support the widespread application of labour-based methods for rural road construction in Ghana. This was under the sponsorship of the International Labour Office and the Department of Feeder Roads. Immediately after the course at Delft, he had a six (6) month post-doctoral research at the Institute of Industrial Safety of the Ministry of Labour in Tokyo, Japan as Research Fellow.

Prof Ampadu has served on various capacities at KNUST as examination officer for, and Head at, the Civil Engineering Department. He has supervised over 150 undergraduate students', and over 20 postgraduate students', thesis. In 2004, he led a team to develop the Road and Transportation Engineering Project. This is a World Bank Support Project to train high level personnel in the transportation industry. He served as the Project Manager for four (4) years.

He has authored and co authored several technical publications for local and international conferences especially in the geotechnical engineering domain. He is currently the chairman  for TC-107, technical committee on Laterite and Lateritic soils, of ISSMGE. He is the current President of the Ghana Geotechnical Society and doubles as the President Elect of the Ghana Institution of Engineers of which he is a Fellow. Prof Ampadu provides consultancy services in development engineering as well as geotechnical and related engineering.
